Lateisha Green (born Moses Cannon on July 4, 1986) was 22 years old on the night of November 14, 2008, when she and her 18 year-old brother, Mark Cannon, were invited to attend a party on Seymour Street in Syracuse, New York. While she had made the conscious decision to attend the party dressed in clothing appropriate to the male gender, Lateisha typically dressed as, and was identified by her true gender identity – that is, female. It was something her family and friends had accepted about her since she was 16.
A short while after Teish (as family and friends called her) and Mark arrived at the party, other guests became angry and started yelling (as police reports later suggested) “vulgar and profane comments” at the pair, because they thought both of them were gay. Teish and Mark left the party shortly thereafter, and sat in their car to talk with another friend, who was seated in the back.
A few minutes later, a 20 year-old man named Dwight DeLee walked out of the house, carrying with him a .22 caliber rifle. Without saying a word, he fired a single shot into the car window, which grazed Mark’s arm and hit Teish in the chest.
Cannon quickly drove away from the scene, nearly 13 blocks to a spot where police found them, and EMS officials quickly transported both Mark and Teish to the hospital. While Mark’s injury was not life-threatening, Teish was pronounced dead upon arrival.
